Feast Day: March 4

Born in 1458 a Polish prince, the 2nd son and 3rd of 13 children of King Casimir IV and Elizabeth of Austria. Committed to God from childhood, he rebelled against the riches of the royal court, living a life of purity, prayer and compassion. He prayed instead of sleep and chose to lay on the floor rather than a royal bed. As a teenager his father sent him as head of the army to overtake the throne of Hungary; while disagreeing with the war effort, he was obedient. When the army failed, Casimir returned home a conscientious objector. Exiled by his angry father, he returned to prayer and helping the poor. Under pressure to marry, he remained celibate his entire life, dying at 23 of tuberculosis and buried with his favorite Marian hymn, “Omni die die Mariae,” (Daily, Daily Sing of Mary), since known as the “Hymn of St. Casimir”. In one of his first miracles, he appeared before Lithuanian troops in battle leading them safely across a river in 1518.
