Born in Italy in 1550, his mother died in his childhood and father neglected him. At 17 he fought as a Venetian soldier against the Turks, suffering a leg disease. Addicted to gambling and penniless at 24, he found work at the Capuchin friary. Moved by a sermon, he became a Capuchin novice but was unable to profess due to diseased leg. Devoted himself to caring for the sick, became a hospital director in Rome, and with permission from his confessor (St. Philip Neri) was ordained and started the Ministers of the Sick congregation (the Camellians) to serve the sick and minister to wounded troops in Hungary and Croatia (the first field medical unit); the red cross symbol was their sign of charity and service. Gravely ill for many years with his diseased leg, he resigned as Order superior in 1607 and died soon after. Patron of doctors, hospitals, nurses, healthcare workers
