Born in 1480 to a noble Venetian family, the youngest of three sons, with a rigorous education guided by this mother after his father’s death when he was 2. Studied law before his ordination at 36; joined the Oratory of Divine Love in Rome, devoted to piety and charity. In the troubled times of unscrupulous priests and the start of the Protestant revolt, he became part of the heart of the Catholic reformation. Established a new order, The Congregation of Clerks Regular (Theatines) who built hospitals, lived in the spirit of monasticism, and ministered to the poor and sick, practicing charity constantly. Created a bank – a charitable credit organization - for the less fortunate which later became The Bank of Naples. Had a vision on Christmas Eve 1517 of the Virgin Mary placing the Christ Child in his arms. Fell ill and died on the boards he slept on in 1547. “The Father of Providence” he aids those who invoke him with great miracles. Patron of job seekers, bankers, good luck.
