An Irish abbot, monastic founder and missionary, contributed to the conversion of the Picts. One of the most popular Celtic saints in Scotland (Kenneth) and Ireland (Canice, Cainnech). Born in 515 in Northern Ireland, the son of a famous bard. Became a disciple of St. Finnian of Clonard, later living at other monasteries where he met Sts. Ciaran and Comgal. Ordained a priest in 545. When the plague broke out, moved to Scotland where he is said to have erected the first church in St. Andrews and built a monastery on Inchkenneth (“Kenneth’s Isle”). Returned to Ireland to establish new monasteries, including the most famous at Aghaboe (“little field of the cow”) in 577. Close friends with St. Columba who miraculously escaped a shipwreck through the prayers of St. Kenneth when they were apart. When the two were threatened by the pagan Pict king Brude, Kenneth paralyzed him by the sign of the cross and the king later accepted baptism. Many tales of animals obeying him and a deer holding his bible on its horns while he read it.
