Born in Ireland around 450, her nobleman father rejected her and her mother, a Christian slave. Her mother in charge of a Druid’s dairy, Brigid’s faith encouraged charity to the poor to give away butter and milk; the dairy continued to prosper, eventually leading to their freedom from slavery. She became a good friend of St. Patrick, founding several convents and even a school of art specializing in illuminated manuscripts. Legend says that when Brigid passed, her nuns kept a fire lit for centuries and it is an Irish tradition to weave small woven Brigid’s crosses.
