Born in 1303 of a pious family and married at 13, she bore eight children before joining the King of Sweden’s court to teach his young bride. Later her beloved husband fell ill after their pilgrimage to Santiago di Compostela; while praying for him, St. Denis appeared to her, foretelling “God had great things for her to do.” At 41, God called her to start an order for nuns with chaplains. As she began work, Christ called her to Rome where she remained until her death, seeing many visions and toiling with little success. Nevertheless, the Bridgettines and their habit with the five wounds crown spread throughout Europe.
