Born in 484 in County Kerry, Ireland. Baptized and educated in monasteries from an early age, one of the 12 Apostles of Ireland tutored by the great teacher St Finnian of Clonard. Ordained a priest at 26, founding a number of monasteries. Most known for his legendary sea travels, sailing to Scotland where he met St. Columcille, onto Wales and finally Brittany, France. In his famous voyage of 7 years for Paradise to search for the Garden of Eden with 16 monks, he finds the “Isle of the Blessed” covered with vegetation (also known as St. Brendan’s Isle) in the western Atlantic. He encounters a sea monster with St. Columcille, illustrated as his landing on an island which turned out to be a giant sea monster named “Jasconius”. Legend says he celebrated Easter Mass on the back of a giant whale. Died in 577. The “Voyage of St Brendan the Abbot” is an Irish navigational narrative widely known throughout the Middle Age which Christopher Columbus may have used to navigate the seas.
