Born in 1221 in Italy, baptized John. Received the name Bonaventure as a Franciscan at 22. A Doctor of the Church, a theologian, philosopher, teacher, writer, Cardinal and mystic, lovingly called the “Seraphic Doctor.” Close friends of St. Thomas Aquinas and King St. Louis IX. As faculty at the University of Paris, known for his Franciscan love for Jesus and the Church. Considered the second founder of the Franciscans, left teaching to become the order’s General Minister amidst conflicts; through 17 years of service, he organized the Friars’ spirituality on the vision of St. Francis. With noticeable warmth to his teachings and writings, and with wisdom and humility he united the pastoral and practical aspects of life with the Church doctrines. Appointed a bishop and Cardinal by Pope Gregory X. A year later in 1274, while speaking at the Second Council of Lyons, died suddenly, possibly poisoned. Patron of intestinal disorders
