A skilled physician for humans and animals, Blaise was also a “physician of souls." As bishop, Blaise led his fellow Christians during a time of brutal persecution, ultimately martyred for his faith. When arrested in 316, he cured a boy choking on a fish bone on his way to prison. Another legend tells of him commanding that a wolf release a woman’s pig, then becoming known as “the saint of the wild beast.” Because a woman once brought him two candles for light in his cell, the Church’s Blessing on the Throats on his feast day involves candles with a blessing across the throat.
