Born in 1380, at 20 volunteered to care for the many plague-stricken patients of Siena, later caring for an invalid aunt until her death. Entered Franciscan order at 22, ordained a priest in 1404. 12 years later started preaching across Italy, with his sermons attracting up to 30,000 with thousands of conversions. One of the greatest preachers of his time, his words calming strife-torn cities, attacking rampant paganism, and instructing on St Francis’ “vice and virtue, punishment and glory.” Known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, devising a symbol – IHS, the first 3 letters of the name of Jesus in Greek – in Gothic letters on a blazing sun, displacing superstitious symbols of the day. The devotion spread, the symbol appearing in churches, homes and public buildings. Strongly emphasized scholarship and further study of theology and canon law in the Franciscan order, growing the order from 300 friars to 4000 at his death in 1444 while traveling. Patron of advertising, public relations.
