Born in 1029 of a noble family and well educated, he devoted himself to the Church, refusing arranged marriage by throwing himself out of a castle window but caught by angels. Ordained a priest and disturbed by the pagan ways of the Alps, he founded the Congregation of the Canons Regular to preach to them. Caring for pilgrims traveling to Rome across the treacherous snow-covered Alps, he founded Hospices along The Great and Little St. Bernard Passes where the Canons accompanied by well trained dogs (later known as St. Bernard’s) would go in search of victims to care for.
