Born in 1090 into a high-nobility family near Dijon, France, the 3rd of seven with five brothers and one sister, his devout parents instilling a deep faith and comprehensive education. After the death of this mother, entered the Cistercian Order at 22 at Citeaux; so passionate about his faith, he convinced his brothers, uncle, and many friends to join the abbey. Sent to establish a monastery in Champagne known as Clairvaux (Valley of Light), leading as abbot the rest of his life. Despite a desire for a solitary contemplative life, traveled throughout France, Germany and Italy trying to reconcile Church divisions and avoid schism. A Doctor of the Church for his writing and sermons on theology that greatly influenced 12thc. Europe, consulted by Popes and political leaders. Labeled the “Honey-Sweet Doctor” for his eloquence in defending the faith. Well-known for his Marian devotion, writing The Memorare prayer. Died in 1153. Patron of beekeepers, candlemakers, Cistercians, Knights Templar.
