Born in 1844 in Lourdes, France the oldest of 9 in a poor family, she had poor health. At 14 while gathering firewood, The Virgin Mary appeared to her in a grotto saying “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Falling to her knees, she took out her Rosary and continued to see Mary for two weeks. Mary told her to dig in the mud and drink of the water that sprung forth; this became a clear spring where pilgrims continue to journey for healing. On the 13th apparition, Mary asked a chapel be built. Humbly, Bernadette joined the Sisters of Charity to escape attention; her body remains incorrupt. Patron of illness, those ridiculed for piety, poverty
