Born in 329, a deacon and martyr in Persia. The Christians in Persia had enjoyed 12 yrs of peace during the reign of Isdegerd; but in 420 due to the indiscretion of Abdas, a Christian Bishop, who destroyed the pagan Temple of Fire, a 40yr persecution of Christians began. Chrisitan churches were destroyed and Abdas put to death. As a Christian leader, Benjamin was imprisoned for a year until an ambassador of the Emperor of Constantinople obtained his release on condition that he would never speak to any of the courtiers about religion; however, Benjamin declared it was his duty to preach Christ and wouldn’t be silenced, neglecting no opportunity of preaching. Again apprehended and brought before King Varanes, who carried out the persecutions with great fury, submitting the Christians to the most cruel tortures of their bodies. A knotted stake was the final torture into his body that caused his most terrible agony and expiration in 424. Patron of preachers, evangelists. Feast Day: March 31
