Born in 480 to a noble family but horrified by the heartless rhetoric without truth in Rome, Benedict fled to become a hermit. After years of prayer, word of his holiness brought monks for his leadership. Warning them he would be too strict, they insisted but tried to poison him: a poisonous cup shattered when he prayed over it and a poisoned bread was carried off by a raven. At Monte Cassino he founded the roots of the one community monastic system and the Regula (Rule) to a balanced life of prayer and work: Ora et Laborum. His holiness led to miracles and his twin sister, St. Scholastica, settled nearby. Patron of Europe, monks, poison victims
