Born in 1748 in France, the eldest of 18 children. Studied under his uncle a priest, but his eccentric manners proved his desire for entering religious life unsuccessful. When an epidemic devasted his small town and took his uncle’s life, he became a pilgrim at 16, traveling from one great shrine to another living all alms (plate). Wearing the rags of a beggar, he shared his food with the poor. Filled with the love of God and neighbor, he had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and to the Blessed Sacrament. Living in the Colosseum for a time, becoming known as the Beggar of Perpetual Adoration, “the poor man of the Forty Hours devoation,” and the “beggar of Rome.” With his ragged appearance he told himself, “our comfort is not of this world.” On his birthday in 1783, he dragged himself to a church in Rome, praying for two hours before he collapsed to his death at 35. Immediately after his death, people proclaimed him a saint. Patron of bachelors, rejects, mental illness, insanity, the homeless. Feast Day: April 16
