Born in Caesarea in 330 one of ten children to St. Basil the Elder and St.Emmelia, several siblings also saints. Educated in Constantinople and Athens, opened oratory school and practiced law before becoming a monk and founding monasteries. Wrote most lasting monastic rule in the East. Ordained and made Bishop of Caesaria in 370. Early church giant, earned title “Great” during his life and Doctor of the Church after death in 379. Responsible for victory of Nicene orthodoxy over Arianism. With genuine eloquence, charity, and personal holiness he fought evil, aided victims, and strove for better clergy.
