Bartholomew (meaning “son of Tolomai”) is listed in the New Testament as one of 12 Apostles. Scholars identify him with Nathanael, a man from Cana who was summoned to Jesus by Philip. Jesus paid him a great compliment “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.” When he asked how Jesus knew him, Jesus said, “I saw you under the fig tree,” causing him to exclaim, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” (John 1:47-50). He was one of those whom Jesus appeared on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias after his resurrection (John 21:1-14). Later he preached in India and Armenia, where he was flayed and beheaded. His death is commonly depicted in religious artworks, but his martyrdom has also been used to represent anatomical depictions of the human body devoid of flesh. Patron of tanners, leatherworkers
