Born Joseph from the tribe of Levi in Cyprus. A follower of Jesus, after Christ’s death, sold his property and placed the money at the feet of the Apostles (Acts 4:36-37). His name changed to Barnabas (son of encouragement), he traveled with and supported Saul to the Apostles after his conversion to Paul. Acts chronicles their travels and apostolate to the Gentiles, testifying on behalf of them concerning Jewish rites. With Paul, the first to instruct the Christian community at Antioch with much success and miracles; here the first followers of Christ were called “Christian.” St. Luke wrote of Barnabas with esteem, “for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith” (Acts 11:22-24), as close to anyone outside the Twelve to being a full-fledged apostle. Martyred by a disagreeing mob in Cyprus in 61AD, his body was found incorrupt in 448. Patron of Cyprus, Antioch, against hailstorms, invoked as a peacemaker.
