Born in 639, one of 4 saintly children of Anna, King of East Anglia (her siblings would later found monasteries). An East Anglican princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and eventually the Abbess of Ely, she married and was widowed after 3 years but upheld her perpetual vow of virginity; her 2nd husband Egfrid honored her for 12 years, but when he changed his mind, the Bishop St Wilfrid of York upheld her vow and helped her separate through an annulled marriage. Thanks to a 7-day high tide she fled to the Monastery of Ely where she later became abbess. Died of enormous tumors on her neck in 679, thinking it Divine Retribution for the necklaces worn in the past. Uncorrupted body discovered 16 years after her death transferred to a white marble coffin, proving to possess miraculous powers; her hand remains incorrupt. During the Middle Ages “St. Audrey’s Fair” was held at Ely on her feast day. Patron of neck and throat ailments, widows and Cambridge University.
