Born in 297 to a Christian family in Alexandria, Eqypt and given a classical education, became secretary to Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria, an outspoken critic of Arianism. Entered the priesthood, eventually named bishop, continuing the fight against Arianism (heresy denying the divinity of Christ). Unexpectedly exiled to northern Gaul by Emperor Constantine; frequently in danger, he was exiled five times (47 years total) for his defense of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity, but continued to care for his flock in this separation. Enjoyed a peaceful 10-year period of reading, writing, and promoting the Christian life along the lines of the monastic ideal. His ascetical writing, “Life of St. Anthony” of the desert achieved astonishing popularity, contributing greatly to the establishment of monastic life throughout the Western Christian world. This “Champion of Orthodoxy”, a Doctor of the Church, assisted at the Council of Nicea where the Nicene Creed was established. Died in 373.
