A Christian persecution during the reign of Emperor Philip in Alexandria (prior to the persecution of Decius) led many to their death. Apollonia (most likely a deaconess) held in high esteem, was one of a group of virgin martyrs who would not renounce their faith; violently beaten, all her teeth were knocked out. Her persecutors erected a pile of wood outside the city gates, threatening to burn her alive; she stood firm, voluntarily jumping into the flames (possibly to preserve her chastity) to her death in 249. In areas of Italy, she is cast in the role of tooth fairy. The account of her life was written by St. Dionysius, Bishop of Alexandria to Fabian, Bishop of Antioch. Patron: dentists, tooth problems
