Born in Portugal in 1195, Anthony was a Franciscan friar known for his rich knowledge of Church theology and an incredible ability to explain the Faith so that anyone could understand even the deepest truths. He is portrayed holding the Child Jesus who once appeared to him and touched his face. When a book of psalms and notes he cherished was stolen, his prayers returned it to him. Dying at 35, he was canonized one year later. St. Anthony’s Bread Is a term used for offerings made in thanksgiving to God for blessings received through the saint’s intercession.
