St. Angela Merici Wooden Doll Ornament

Born in 1474 on Italian vineyard, at 10 her parents passed; continued devout Catholic life with her sister and uncle. After sister’s sudden death, comforted with a vision of her soul in Heaven, inspired to dedicate herself to the Lord. Joined Third Order of St. Francis, pledging herself a consecrated virgin. Through vision of a ladder leading young virgins to Heaven, the Lord asked her to found an institution for devout training of young girls. Founded Company of St. Ursula (arrow) in 1535 dedicated to the service of the Church through the education of girls. Living in their own homes, the girls met for prayer and classes. Later sprang the monastic Order of Ursulines whose nuns established places of prayer and learning worldwide. Once on Holy Land pilgrimage, as it began she was struck blind praying before a crucifix; faithful, she remained blind during the trip but sight restored before same crucifix on return home. Died in 1540.
