He was 12 when his parents died and found work as a farmhand and factory worker. At 25, Brother Andre entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal with a letter from his pastor: "I am sending you a saint." For the rest of his life, he remained a humble doorkeeper, but his devoted prayers to Saint Joseph brought about many cures and miracles, and thousands flocked to him. Saving nickels from haircuts, he started building an oratory for St. Joseph. Construction continued for 50 years after his death; to this day, crutches used by the miraculously healed line the walls of the Oratory on Mount Royal.
