Born in 340 to a Roman Christian family, he is one of the four original Doctors of the Church. As an infant, bees landed on his face leaving a drop of honey – a sign of his gift of speech. Educated in law in Rome, he attended and spoke at an election after the Bishop of Milan died; the crowd elected him as bishop, but being neither baptized nor trained in theology, he refused and hid. Within a week he was baptized, ordained and consecrated a bishop.
