Born in 1696 to Italian nobility, a child prodigy receiving his doctorate in law at 16. Entered the priesthood, ordained at 29 and a bishop at 66. Founder of the Redemptorists order in 1732 as an association of priests and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, parish missions and hearing confessions. Fought for the liberation of moral theology from the rigidity of Jansenism, concentrating on pastoral reforms in the pulpit and confessional – replacing the pompous oratory with simplicity, and the rigorism of Jansenism with kindness. At 71 afflicted with rheumatic pains which left incurable bending of his neck, causing a raw wound on his chest from his chin. The most published author in history with over 21,000 editions of his works printed including “Glories of Mary” and “Visits to the Blessed Sacrament” which went through 40 editions in his lifetime and greatly influenced adoration in the Church. Died in 1787. Patron of arthritis, confessors, moral theologians. Feast Day: August 1
