Born in Italy the oldest of 7 to an aristocratic family, his first words spoken were “Jesus” and “Mary. Destined for the military by his father but by age 9 decided on religious life and took a vow of perpetual virginity (lilies), keeping his eye downcast in the presence of women. Blessed to be given his first Holy Communion by St. Charles Borromeo, at 18 he chose the Jesuits. Suffering from kidney disease, skin ailments, chronic headaches and insomnia, he spent much time in prayer and reading the lives of the saints; he taught catechism to the poor and served in Milan hospitals during the plague of 1587. With a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary (rosary), he received last rites from St. Robert Bellarmine, he died at 23 of the plague (skull).
