Born in 848 the 5th son of the Wessex King Ethelwulf, who died when he was young. During a journey to Rome in 853, accepted as a godson by Pope Leo IV. A great scholar translating classics for his people, early on destined for a career in the Church. Instead, followed his older brothers as king, forced to spend most of his reign (871-899) in conflict with the Vikings and Danes threatening England. Fought in battle and made an agreement with the Vikings to divide England into the Anglo-Saxon territory and Vking-ruled Danelaw; oversaw the conversion of the Viking leader Guthrum to Christianity. Established a court school that brought in foreign scholars and made laws with no distinctions between English and Welsh subjects (a first). Patronage of the arts, literature and especially the Church made him a beloved figure in England as a learned and merciful man, the only English monarch given the title “the Great.” Died in 899. Patron of learning, the arts, literature.
