Born in the 5th c. the only son of a wealthy Roman senator and his wife. From the charitable example of his parents, he developed a compassionate attitude at an early age. In compliance with his parents, he was to marry a wealthy girl but parted with her consent to retire from the world. Traveled to Syria in disguise, embraced extreme poverty and resided in a hut attached to a church dedicated to the Mother of God at Edessa. Here he lived for 17 years until an image of Our Lady spoke and revealed to him his holiness to the people, calling him “the Man of God”. He returned to his home; his father didn’t recognize him but received him as beggar and employed him, allotting a corner under the staircase as his quarters. The next 17 years he lived unknown in his father’s house, bearing the ill treatment of other servants in patience and silence; upon his death, an account of his life revealed his identity and the house converted to a church. Patron of the Congregation of Alexian Brothers.
