A 3rd c. student of Origen at the famous Christian school of Alexandria. He became the 1st bishop of Cappadocia and was imprisoned from 204-211. Afterwards he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem where he became bishop and developed an extensive theological library. He allowed Origen to teach in churches while still a layman, participated in his ordination and offered Origen exile. For steadfastly proclaiming the faith, he was imprisoned twice during the persecution of Decius. After making a public confession of faith, he was thrown to the wild beasts, but they refused to attack him, licking his feet. Surviving many tortures, he was carried off as a prisoner to Caesarea; historians say, “The glory of white hairs and great sanctity formed a double crown for him in captivity.” Died in chains in 251AD, recognized by the Church as a martyr.
