Born in 1206 to a wealthy and powerful German family. Studied at University of Padua learning Aristotle (later made commentary on nearly all of his works). Encounter with the Blessed Virgin moved him to ordination as a Dominican Friar in 1223. Doctor of the Church with great intellect, he taught and wrote about science, philosophy and theology at University of Paris and Cologne. Studied leading Muslim scholars in scholarship, science and medicine. In 1254 as Dominican Order provincial, helped create a curriculum for the order including philosophy. With one of his students, St. Thomas Aquinas, probed how faith, reason and science could coexist. Appointed bishop of Regensburg in 1260, but refused to ride a horse, going everywhere on foot; resigned in 1263 to become a mediator, working to unite the East and West at the Council of Lyons. Wrote 38 volumes covering topics from philosophy to law to love. Suffered dementia until death in 1280. Patron of scientists, philosophers.
