Irish monk who restored Christianity to Northumbria c. 600. Founded abbey on the island of Lindisfarne, served as its 1st bishop and traveled throughout the countryside spreading the Gospel. Aidan (Aeden, Aodhan “little fiery one”) was known for his strict asceticism (including weekly Wed and Fri fasting), but politely conversed with people, slowing interesting them in Christianity. Allegedly knelt in prayer in his cell when he saw black smoke from the capital city from pagan army fires; miraculously the winds reversed toward the rescinding enemy. Died in 651, leaning against a local church wall. Patron: Northumbria, firefighters
