Agnes' name means "pure" in Greek and "lamb" in Latin. Born near 300, this beautiful 13-year-old daughter of Roman nobles consecrated herself to Christ. Refusing to marry, she turned down numerous high-ranking suitors; when they attempted to force her into impurity, Agnes resisted, strong in her love of Christ. After several attempts to kill her, she was beheaded for her faith. On her feast day, two lambs are blessed by the pope; on Holy Thursday, their wool is used to make palliums for newly consecrated archbishops. Mentioned in the first Eucharistic Prayer.
Feast Day: January 21
