One of the most highly venerated virgin martyrs of the Church, Agatha was born around 231 in a noble family. She became a consecrated virgin, but it did not stop men from desiring her with persistent proposals she refused. Placed in prisons for her faith during the reign of Decius, she was forced into unspeakable suffering, including the removal of her breasts, for refusing to break her vows to Christ. However, Agatha had a vision of the apostle, St. Peter, who comforted her and healed her wounds through his prayers. Four days later after more torture, she died praying, “receive now my soul.”
