At 28, head of the Praetorium Guard of the Roman Emperor Galerius Maximian in the early 4th c. While presiding over the torture of Christians, he was so impressed with their courage he publicly declared himself a Christian, immediately imprisoned and tortured with them. Forbidden visitors, his wife Natalia dressed as a boy to see him before his death and ask for his prayers when he entered Heaven. Executioners wanted to burn the dead bodies, but a storm arose, quenching the fire; Natalia recovered one of Adrian’s hands before fleeing to Argyropolis near Constantinople. Adrian is the chief military saint of Northern Europe, revered in Flanders, Germany and northern France. Patron of guards, soldiers, butchers
