Born a Burgundy princess in 932, arranged marriage at 16 to Lothair of Italy who died 3 years later. When she refused to marry his successor’s son, imprisoned and throne seized. She escaped, sought help from King Otto of Germany who conquered Italy and married him in 951. Pope John XII crowned them as rulers of the Holy Roman Empire in 962; first empress designated “consors regni” or co-bearer of royalty sharing power with her husband. After Otto’s death and quarrel with son, Otto II, left the court for Burgundy; reconciled and returned as Regent for her grandson, Otto III. One of the most influential women of the 10th c., using her position and power to help the poor, evangelize, and build and restore monasteries and churches. Died in 999 at the convent at Seltz which she founded. Patron of brides, parents of large families, in-law problems
