Abigail (also known as St. Gobnait or Deborah) was born in 6th century Ireland to a feuding family. Running away from home, an angel instructed her to find nine white deer grazing in the place where she should spend her life; her journey across the southern coast is now marked by churches and holy wells. Finding them, she dedicated her life to charitable work, founding a monastery with her brother, St. Abban. As a beekeeper, she allegedly rousted bees to chase off evil and used honey to treat the sick, until her "soul left her body" – a flying bee in Irish legend.
