Born in 1937 in Canton, MS, the only child of a physician and teacher, converted at 9 to Catholicism through the inspiration of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration who were teachers at her school. Called at 15 to join this order, taking the name Sr. Mary Thea (meaning “God”) after the Blessed Mother and her father, Theon. She became a teacher of all grade levels, eventually receiving her PhD and a college professor of English. The late 1960s were a turbulent time of transformation for the nation with racial strife; Sr. Thea had a spiritual and cultural awakening and with Vatican II, encouraged her to rediscover her African-American heritage. She became a highly acclaimed evangelizer, writer and singer sharing the joy of the Gospel at conferences throughout the US - the “Minister of Joy.” Started the Black Catholic Studies at the University of New Orleans and founded the Black Catholic Religious Institute. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984, she vowed to “live until I die,” passing in 1990.
