Born in 1867 on a New York farm, the 7th of 8 children to Irish devout Catholic immigrants. Despite no acquaintance with religious Sisters and the dismissal of her parents, she committed to follow a religious vocation from the age of 12. At 19 entered the Holy Cross Sisters in South Bend, IN, teaching in Catholic schools for 33 years. All the while, God was preparing her for her mission of founding a contemplative-missionary Congregation for the streets and homes, to teach the faith and counsel, and reclaim lapsed and uninstructed Catholics. On the feast of the Assumption in 1920, she arrived in NYC to the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate (PVMI), having left the Holy Cross Sisters with approval. She called her new mission “the cause” or “the original vocation” because it came straight from the Heart of her Beloved. Drawn to her fervor and enthusiasm for God, and despite her private suffering of disabling illnesses the last 20 years of her life, the Community flourished. She died in 1954.
