Born a slave in Hannibal, MO between 1833-1848, lost her right eye when slave master’s whip hit her during the beating of her mother. Moved to Denver, CO in 1878 working for the state’s first territorial governor. Later found odd jobs earning $10/month cleaning and cooking using much of it to help the poor. Collected food and clothing, often distributing at night to avoid embarrassing the poor. Joined the Catholic Church in 1880, a daily communicant, with a special devotion to the Sacred Heart. Wearing a black floppy hat, oversized shoes and dabbing her bad eye with a handkerchief, often seen pulling her red wagon of goods for the poor, sharing images of the Sacred Heart and information about prayer. Deep love of children, often sitting for neighborhood families. A “one-person St. Vincent de Paul Society,” Denver’s Angel of Charity died unexpectedly in 1918 on the Feast of the Sacred Heart; through word of mouth, a steady stream of rich and poor paid their respects at the church for hours.
