Dr. Lejeune was a French Catholic geneticist known for discovering the genetic basis for Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21 – the existence of three rather than the normal two 21st chromosomes) in the late 1950s and then spending his life and career defending the inherent dignity of all, regardless of chromosome count. He often expressed regret that his scientific findings led people to choose abortion when faced with a prenatal diagnosis they were afraid of. In 1969 he won the world’s highest honor in genetics and at the awards ceremony gave a speech rejecting the morality of abortion, an unpopular opinion in his profession and one that would effectively cause him to lose the Nobel Prize in Medicine. After a life of scientific breakthrough discoveries and decades of faithful work defending the right to life of human embryos and preborn children, he died in 1994 of lung cancer.
