The 10th child born into a devout Italian immigrant family in NY in 1929, he prayed for three older brothers who served in WWII before his call to serve as a Maryknoll priest. After nine years of intensive preparation in theology academics and basic survival skills to fulfill the order’s mission “Go and Teach All Nations,” he was sent to Taiwan in 1958 and later Hong Kong. He joined the Navy Chaplain Corps in 1965 to serve the Marines in Vietnam. A constant companion to his Marine battalion, he was nicknamed the “Grunt Priest” because of his reputation for living, eating and sleeping in the same conditions as them, “energized” by the opportunity to serve these brave troops. In September 1967 after hours of heavy fighting and himself seriously injured, he was shot 27 times while administering to a wounded soldier. Posthumously received many military honors including The Purple Heart. The USS Capodanno Navy ship was the first ship to receive a Papal Blessing. Many military Chapels bear his name.
