Born on a Pilsen, KS farm, he was ordained in 1940 before entering the army assigned to the 8th Calvary Regiment in 1950. During the Battle of Unsan, he moved fearlessly amongst foxholes under enemy fire to drag wounded to safety, rejecting chances to escape before taken as a prisoner of war on Nov 2, 1950. Marching 87 miles with his troops, he carried those unable to walk who’d face death, encouraging others to help too. At camp he snuck out at dark to forage for food, care for the sick and sustain the faith, even conducting a banned sunrise Easter service in 1951. Suffering from his wounds, the Chinese transferred him to a filthy hospital where he died alone on May 23, 1951 at 35. As he was carried there by his men, he asked God’s forgiveness for his captors and made his fellow prisoners promise to keep their faith. He was awarded several medals including the Bronze Star.
