Born in 1897 into a journalist’s family in Brooklyn, NY. After surviving the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, her family moved into a tenement flat on Chicago’s South Side; with her father unemployed, this was a big step down in the world for the Day family and she understood the shame people felt when they fail in their efforts. She became a journalist, social activist and Catholic convert. In the 1930s, she worked closely with fellow activity Peter Maurin to establish the Catholic Worker Movement, a pacifist movement that continues to combine direct aid to the poor and homeless with nonviolent direction action on their behalf. A nonviolent way of life, as she saw it, was at the heart of the Gospel. Among those who visited her was Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Long before her death in 1980 she was regarded as a saint, to which she responded, “Don’t call me a saint. I don’t want to be dismissed so easily.” “If I have achieved anything in my life, it is because I have not been embarrassed to talk about God.”

Made of wood, felt, ribbon, and handmade accessories. Includes tag and card with Saint's biography and description. Approximately 4" tall. Packaged in cellophane bag. Shipped in box with bubble wrap.
