Born in Chihuahua in 1892 with seven siblings. Began seminary at 17, known for his piety and Eucharistic devotion. Due to hostile Mexican politics the seminary was suppressed in 1914, sending him home and then to El Paso, TX for ordination in 1918. Despite the risk, he returned to Chihuahua during a terrible epidemic to serve their spiritual and material needs. In 1924 he took over Santa Isabel igniting Eucharistic piety among his parishioners. In 1929 the Cristeros surrendered their weapons, however Mexico continued Catholic persecution. In 1934 he was deported to El Paso, but returned to Santa Isabel. In 1937 he was captured by drunk, armed men but he quickly took possession of the reliquary. Struck in the skull, dislodging his left eye and thrown to the floor, he pressed the monstrance against his chest, soaked in his own blood. When the pyx fell open, the executioner ordered him to eat the hosts – fulfilling his last wish to receive communion before his death – dying the next morning.
