Born in 1835 in Venice, known as the Pope of the Suffering, with a firm demeanor and sense of personal poverty he rejected favors for his family who chose to live in poverty near Rome during his papacy. Accomplishments include the inauguration of the liturgical renewal and restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He waged an unwavering war against the evils of Modernism with great impetus on biblical studies, renewing all things in Christ, and the codification of Canon Law. Devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Confidence, he had a reputation for piety and holiness before his death in 1914.
