Born the son of a Roman named Rusticus, he was elected Pope to succeed Pope St. Mark (whose reign was only 9 mo) in 337. The Church was in a troubled state due to Arian agitators whose heresy had been condemned at Nicea, but were deceiving Emperor Constantine of their true character; when he died, his sons divided the Empire. Julias was soon involved in the Arian controversy when Eusebius of Nicomedia opposed the return of the exiled Athanasius (who has been the object of Arian persecution for some time) as Bishop of Alexandria. On his 2nd banishment, St. Athanasius came to Rome, was recognized as the rightful Bishop by a Synod of bishops, and in a letter to Eusebian reinstated him in 340. The matter wasn’t settled until the Council of Sardica (Sofia) that any deposed Bishop had the right of appeal to the Pope in Rome; it also declared Athanasius as orthodox and deposed certain Arian bishops. Pope Julius I also set December 25 as the date of the Birth of Jesus. Died in 352. Feast Day: April 12
