Born near Krakow, Poland in 1920, Karol J. Wojtyla studied drama before the university was closed by Nazi occupation, thereafter, working in quarries and factories to avoid deportation to Germany. His studies to the priesthood began in 1942, eventually appointed Archbishop of Krakow in 1964 and a cardinal in 1967.
Elected on October 16, 1978, the first Polish pope - and non-Italian pope since the 1500s - he died in May 2005 as the longest-serving modern pope. He survived an assassination attempt on May 13, 1981, attributing it to the protection of Our Lady of Fatima.
