Born in 540 in Rome to a very wealthy family who owned estates on the island of Sicily. Well educated, he excelled in his studies becoming an expert in law. At 33, became the Prefect of Rome and converted the family villa in Rome into a monastery which still stands, and founded six others. One of four great Doctors of the Latin Church and the first monk to become Pope. Known for his contributions to the Liturgy of the Mass, with changes which remain today. As a monk, Gregory was hard and strict. Well known for his alms to the poor with everything from church money to land liquidated; ordered his clergy to seek out the poor in the streets, giving them free food produced on church lands. Refused to eat until his monks returned home from alms giving; dined with a dozen poor people at each meal. Famous for his emphasis on missionary work. Music historians dispute his credit with Gregorian Chant (Gregory II, 100 years later). Died in 604.

Patron of teachers, students, musicians.
